Today you head to a beautiful colonial town, Villa de Leyva. Discover its churches and Spanish colonial buildings as well as several sights in the surrounding of Villa de Leyva.
This picturesque village gives the impression of another world which is full of stories. You encounter big windows, Moorish balconies and white facades. Get enchanted by the magic of this special and unique town.
Furthermore you visit the Santo Ecce Homo Monastery. In 1620, it was built as a center of evangelization by Dominicans. You also visit the museum El Fosil with its fascinating collection of fossils. The Iguaque National Park, one of the best preserved reserves in Colombia, is located only 15 km outside of Villa de Leyva. Its altitude reaches between 2.400 and 3.800 meters above sea level and it covers an area of almost 7.000 hectares of beautiful and amazing flora and fauna. The park is home to many species of birds and other animals. You will find out more about the Muisca, an indigenous group which originated here. Take a walk to their religious Lake Iguaque, from where they believe arose their god Bachué and originated mankind. This pilgrimage is said to be spiritual and purifies ones soul and mind. After breakfast, you continue your trip to Ráquira. In the language of the Chibcha, Ráquira means something like "city of the pots." It is known as the capital of the Colombian handicrafts. The city itself is painted in primary colors and has got a big place with lots of ceramic statues. Here you can watch how people make their handcrafts and of course, you can buy one or more arts and crafts for yourself. Let a local artist introduce you in the secrets of his profession and create your own little handicraft which will remind you forever of Colombia and this little colonial village.
