On today’s agenda: A city Tour through Colombia’s capital.
Your trip starts by heading to the Monserrate hill. The cable car takes you up to the top of Monserrate, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the bustling metropolis of Bogotá. Here you will have lunch in one of the great restaurants surrounded by an amazing view. Afterwards you will visit the historic downtown of Bogotá “La Candelaria” with its magnificent churches, the government palace and the "Plaza Bolivar.” Furthermore you will visit the famous gold museum “Museo del Oro” (closed on Mondays) and the Esmeralda museum (closed on Sundays) as well as the museum of Botero where you can marvel at the many great art works of the famous Colombian artist – for example the “Mona Lisa” in exaggerated shape.
Bogotá is an inspiring city that has something new to offer every day. In 2010, Bogotá was selected as a Must See Destination by the renowned newspaper The New York Times.

After breakfast you will head towards Villa de Leyva. On your way you will take a break in Zipaquira, the former center of salt production of the Musica Indiana. The main attraction is the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira. It consists entirely of salt, and thus this cathedral is located in a salt mine it belongs to the largest religious buildings in the world. The Salt Cathedral was opened in honor of the patron saint of the miners. Then you will head on to the Lagoon Guatavita.
After your visit at the famous gold museum in Bogotá yesterday, you will follow the legend of „El Dorado“by visiting the „Laguna de Guatavita“today. This crater lake is situated at an altitude of 3.000 meters. This legend is says that heir to the throne were crowned here. During these ceremonies gold offerings were sunk. According to the legend, alligators, grogs, fish and monkeys made of pure gold were fished from the lake whereupon the legendary treasure of the „El Dorado“is still untraceable. You walk up a steep path up to 3.000 meters until you reach the crater rim. From here you will see the magic looking lagoon. Your guide will tell you the history of this magical place as you walk along the crater rim. Afterwards you will head on to Villa de Leyva, a nice colonial village in Colombia. Today you explore the beautiful colonial town, Villa de Leyva. Discover its churches and Spanish colonial buildings as well as several sights in the surrounding of Villa de Leyva.
This picturesque village gives the impression of another world which is full of stories. You encounter big windows, Moorish balconies and white facades. Get enchanted by the magic of this special and unique town.
Furthermore you visit the Santo Ecce Homo Monastery. In 1620, it was built as a center of evangelization by Dominicans. You also visit the museum El Fosil with its fascinating collection of fossils. Here you will find most of the pieces that were ever found on earth and that have been maintained for thousands of years. Tonight you will return to the Colombian capital and spend the night there. After breakfast, you continue your trip to Ráquira. In the language of the Chibcha, Ráquira means something like "city of the pots." It is known as the capital of the Colombian handicrafts. Here you can watch how people make their handcrafts and of course, you can buy one or more arts and crafts for yourself. Then you will return to Bogotá. Very early in the morning you will catch your flight to Neiva. From here you will head to one of the most beautiful scenery of Colombia – the desert of Tatacoa. The archeological park San Agustín consists of two parts:
Alto de los Ídolos is the archaeological part that belongs to the Isnos region. It is characterized by artificially erected grave mounds, which are connected with each other by raised paths. The hills Chaquira La, La Pelota and Purutal are part of the Huila department. It is characterized by different symbols which are carved into stone. Outstanding are the figures at the edge of the Magdalena River. It is also remarkable how the antecedents extracted colorant through wild growing plants and how they painted their hoes with it.
